Świątek SPILLS BITTER TEARS after losing No. 1 – is this the breakdown before the breakdown?

Iga Świątek’s iron grip on the WTA No. 1 ranking has finally slipped — and tennis fans are wondering: is this just a passing storm or the beginning of a full-scale unraveling?

After a dominant 2024 season, which included her fourth French Open title and solid finishes across all surfaces, Świątek entered 2025 as the undisputed queen of women’s tennis. But a series of early exits and a lack of titles in the new year has seen her ranking slip behind Aryna Sabalenka and even put her outside the top three for the first time since 2022.

The tipping point? Her shocking third-round exit in Rome followed by a disappointing performance in the Madrid Open. Those tournaments, once her stronghold, exposed new vulnerabilities — not just in her game, but in her mindset. In post-match press conferences, Świątek has looked less composed and more candid than ever.

“It’s tough,” she admitted after her Rome exit. “You work so hard, but suddenly you feel like you’re not enough. I know I’m still among the best, but right now… it just hurts.”

Her fans took that as a moment of vulnerability rarely seen from the usually stoic Pole. One clip — where she wiped away tears mid-interview — has gone viral, with speculation running wild online: is Iga experiencing mental fatigue? Is she coping with pressure? Or simply hitting a career plateau?

Experts are divided. Former pro Martina Navratilova says Świątek is “too good to stay down long,” while others, like former coach Patrick Mouratoglou, believe the drop in form is linked to growing pressure and unresolved technical issues. “She’s not the same Iga we saw last summer,” he said. “She’s tighter, overthinking, and no longer bullying opponents off the court.”

Her mental coach, Daria Abramowicz, has been more vocal recently — a sign that Świątek’s team is taking the psychological side of this slump seriously. “Setbacks are part of growth,” Abramowicz tweeted. “Resilience is not about never falling. It’s about getting back up stronger
